The indigenous peoples have always believed that nature spirits inhabited the Earth. These spirits inhabit mountains, lakes, trees, etc and have different forms and roles to suit each case. More modern societies named these spirits as Fairies, Gnomes, Elves, Brownies or even Leprechauns. The ancient writings suggest that, although living in a higher plane than the physical, these nature spirits (or Elementals) are at a low level of spiritual evolution and have no will of their own. They act as the architects/builders of nature as we know it, under direction from a higher level. Their next stage of progression is to manifest as inert matter - rocks etc. - before, over eons of time, evolving through the plant, animal and human kingdoms.
